An indie folk storyteller with an Australian soul and a BC heartbeat
Australian-born and now based on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Jim O’Neill is an indie folk singer-songwriter with a rich background as both a frontman and multi-instrumentalist. His work has been described as “stunning” by ARIA-nominated engineer Jimi Maroudas (The Avalanches, Kimbra). Growing up in the rust-town of Geelong, Australia, Jim taught himself to play on a bashed-up pawn shop guitar his dad bought in the 70s, a starting point that still shapes the honesty and grit in his music today.

As the lead singer and songwriter of the Australian band Autumn Gray and half of the acoustic duo Zach & Jim, he has played festivals and venues across Vancouver Island, in Vancouver, and throughout Australia. Jim has been a sought-after collaborator, performing keyboards, harmonies, and percussion with Australian folk act Luke Legs & The Midnight Specials, touring nationally and appearing at major festivals including Queenscliff Music Festival, Apollo Bay Music Festival, and Yackandandah Folk Festival, alongside boutique gatherings such as the Happy Wanderer Festival and Bicheno Rockpool Festival. His onstage versatility has also seen him perform in Canada as an occasional percussionist with the Cat Murphy Band.

Now performing solo, Jim brings the same blend of heartfelt originals and soulful re-imaginings of songs he loves to every stage — from intimate listening rooms to festival crowds. Known for his warm stage presence, soaring vocals, and intricate guitar work, his performances invite listeners in, whether they’re hearing his own songs or familiar favorites given new life.

Drawing inspiration from artists including Ray LaMontagne, Leif Vollebekk, The Milk Carton Kids, The Decemberists, Tallest Man on Earth, and Gillian Welch, Jim’s career has taken him to stages in four countries across three continents. Now firmly established in Canada, he continues to evolve as a songwriter and performer, bringing a seasoned yet fresh voice to the country’s folk scene.
